2.2.5 Hit Microdramas Need These Satisfaction Points - Combining Resonance Points and Satisfaction Points

Definition and Importance of Resonance Points

We said Satisfaction Points + Resonance Points determine our story topic selection. Let’s look at Resonance Points. What is a Resonance Point? It’s the point that makes the audience feel, “This is talking about me!” If satisfaction points are the fuel that excites the audience, then resonance points are the ticket that makes the audience willing to get on board.

Without resonance points, even the strongest satisfaction points feel like someone else’s story, irrelevant to the viewer. With resonance points, the audience can project themselves into the story, feel it relates to them, and be willing to keep watching, willing to pay.

The Three Types of Resonance Points

Resonance points are mainly divided into three types: Identity Resonance, Situation Resonance, and Emotional Resonance. Identity Resonance means the audience shares similar identity characteristics with the protagonist, e.g., both are office workers, students, parents. Situation Resonance means the audience has experienced similar situations, e.g., being scolded by the boss, failing an exam, heartbreak in a relationship. Emotional Resonance means the audience has had similar emotional experiences, e.g., loneliness, anger, joy, sadness.

How to Uncover Resonance Points

The method to uncover resonance points is simple: deeply understand your target audience. Who are they? What are they experiencing daily? What troubles them? What do they desire? What do they hate most? Fear most? Anticipate most? Turn the answers to these questions into elements in your story, and you will create strong resonance.

The Golden Ratio of Satisfaction Points to Resonance Points

A good microdrama should be a perfect blend of satisfaction points and resonance points. The first 3 episodes should focus heavily on establishing resonance points, making the audience feel, “This is talking about me!” The middle section should gradually introduce satisfaction points, letting the audience experience the pleasure of stress relief. The final part should have a dense爆发 of satisfaction points, making the audience exclaim with delight and willing to pay for what comes next.

Specifically, the ratio of resonance points to satisfaction points should be roughly 3:7. Too much focus on resonance can feel 平淡. Too much focus on satisfaction can feel fake or hollow. Only the right combination of both can create a truly addictive, hit microdrama.

Practical Advice

In actual creation, it’s advised to first identify your target audience, then select the most suitable combination of resonance points and satisfaction points based on their characteristics. For example, for office workers, choose “Workplace Bullying / Injustice” as the resonance point, paired with “Revenge & Face-Slapping” as the satisfaction point. For student groups, choose “Exam Pressure” as the resonance point, paired with “Cheat Code / Underdog Victory” as the satisfaction point.

Remember, the best microdramas aren’t the most high-brow, but the ones that most touch the heart and provide the most stress relief. Grasp satisfaction points and resonance points, and you grasp the essence of microdrama creation.
